Officer Peters had been right. News of his accident was on everybody's lips. He kept saying the stairs were broken. But few believe that. The Williams house was one of the best build in town. Paul Williams was a brickmason. He was the Secretary of the Negro Brickmasons Union. Everybody praised his work. No, the steps were in excellent shape. It was Paul Williams’ daughter. who stopped Peters when he insisted on searching the upstairs. Mrs. Williams had said the man Officer Williams was looking for wasn't there. He should have listened to her. He is lucky that girl didn't kill him.
