Wonderful post! August in my growing-up region of western Washington state always meant blackberries. I still love them fresh off the vine on a warm afternoon. If we'd had our own ice cream churn, there'd have been blackberry ice cream. Mmm-mmm. We did make vanilla once when someone came visiting with an ice cream maker and rock salt. That was a TREAT! You're right about that first spoonful.

Thanks @Tara Penry. I can see you with your blackberry ice cream! My grandmother grew blackberries and strawberries. I wasn't fond of blackberries on or in ice cream. Strawberries were, then and now, my favorite fruit.

We also had a fig tree. That was my hangout on a warm day. Sitting under the tree, reaching up and devouring fig after fig was fun. It wasn't always a smart thing to do. Kids! What we do to our stomachs. I no longer like figs because I ate so many as a child.

Yum. Homemade ice cream is the best!

I have a similar memory of making homemade ice cream with my grandmother on the farm. It wasn't a regular occurrence which made it that much more special. I think there were so many of us we each got a tiny scoop but the effort was worth it.
